In July 1978 Dorothy Hill published her "Bibliography and Index of Australian Palaeozoic Corals". That publication forms the point of origin for the present database, and its format has largely dictated the way in which OZCORALS has been put together. Several new features have been introduced, and the use of Microsoft Access as a platform has afforded a flexibility in working with data that was not possible in the printed version. It was developed using Windows 95 and Microsoft Access 97, on a Toshiba Satellite laptop.
Version 1 expanded the scope of the database to cover the whole of the Phanerozoic, and, as well as Australia, to include New Zealand, New Guinea and Antarctica. In Version 1 the tables cover some 535 names in the genus-group, 1195 in the species group, and 514 bibliographic references.
Version 2 includes an additional 61 bibliographic items, 45 additional genera, and 83 additional species, plus an increased number of ways of accessing the data.
