BACHELOR OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT
Bachelor of Environmental Management
(BEnv Mng)

Macquarie's Environmental Management program has a distinct identity as a strong program that integrates social and scientific knowledge into environmental applications.
It has delivers a strong student-centered awareness of the utility of multi-disciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary thinking in addressing contemporary and future environmental challenges.
The Macquarie BEnvMgt equips students to contribute in a professional and effective way to the advancement of environmental, social and economic justice and sustainability.
We offer a program that is both practical and conceptual. Our program of study encourages flexibility and targets the development of strong student understanding of environmental processes and issues, and a capacity to respond collaboratively, thoughtfully and effectively.
We foster development of students' analytical, communication and management skills at a high level and encourage the development of applied science or social science expertise that is thoughtfully responsive to the diverse contexts and stakeholder interests that characterise contemporary environmental relationships.
The core program consists of the following compulsory units of study:
GEOS118 Foundations for Resource & Environmental Management (3cp) introduces students to key issues and concepts both in terms of the Australian context and the wider planetary scale. This unit develops an integrated framework for thinking about environmental futures.
GEOS264 Geographical Information Systems (3cp) offers a practical introduction to managing spatial data and environmental information using computers.
GEOS267 Resource & Environmental Management: Issues and Solutions (3cp) develops a detailed engagement with Australian environmental issues and the challenges of managing for sustainability.
GEOS321 Resource Management (4cp) is a flagship unit in the environmental social sciences, offering a coherent conceptual framework and challenging view of cross-cultural resource and environmental management.
GEOS328 Environmental Management (4cp) offers an integrative approach to geo-ecological and atmospheric elements of environmental management from a biophysical perspective.
ELS300 Environmental Decision Making (3cp) focuses on the ethics, values and principles for analysing and contributing to environmental decisions that are just, sustainable and effective.
ELS301 Environmental Management Project (3cp) is a capstone research project undertaken in small interdisciplinary teams to address real-world problems.
In addition to these core units, we expect and advise students to select electives in an employment-oriented specialization. For example, matching GEOS328 with units from the Geoecology or Atmospheric Science program, or matching GEOS321 with other units in Human Geography, Development Studies or Indigenous Studies will produce good study programs that meet employment needs.
We encourage Environmental Management students to recognize that there are many pathways to effective participation in environmental management in society and to pursue their passions in their studies. Select the pre-requisite units in earlier years of study and use accademic advice to tailor your ideal program.
In particular, we encourage participation in Macquarie University's outstanding Global Leadership Program (see: http://www.international.mq.edu.au/glp/), the Study Abroad program - including a specialist program in environmental studies at other Australian and some of Europes leading environmental institutions (see: http://www.xplor.edu.au) - and a wide range of extra-curricula activities in the university related to sustainability, justice and improved environmental futures.
The BEnvMgt and BEnvMgt LLB programs are not available in fully external mode, but many of the units can be accessed in flexible modes of study and we strongly support participation in the program by mature age students, including graduates from TAFE environmental programs, where we offer some excellent articulation options.
