Welcome to GEOS219. This unit aims to introduce you to geographical perspectives on population issues and research. In summary, the unit will attempt to help you:

  1. develop an appreciation of the evolving geographic patterning of the demographic processes and characteristics of human populations and how these interrelate in various ways with social, economic, political, cultural, technological and physical environmental factors.

  2. develop an understanding of the basic concepts, definitions and measures used in population geography.

  3. develop a familiarity and competence with some of the research methods used in population geography

Besides helping you develop specific geographic skills (e.g. thinking geographically, becoming familiar with data defined by areas, mapping, learning to investigate spatial relationships, etc.) the unit will also assist you to build up your generic skills competencies (e.g. bibliographic searching, locating and using databases, qualitative and quantitative data analysis, writing skills, oral presentations, etc.).
