This
unit
aims
to
introduce
you
to
geographical
perspectives
on
population
issues
and
research.
In
summary,
the
unit
will
attempt
to
help
you:
- develop
an
appreciation
of
the
evolving
geographic
patterning
of
the
demographic
processes
and
characteristics
of
human
populations
and
how
these
interrelate
in
various
ways
with
social,
economic,
political,
cultural,
technological
and
physical
environmental
factors.
- develop
an
understanding
of
the
basic
concepts,
definitions
and
measures
used
in
population
geography.
- develop
a
familiarity
and
competence
with
some
of
the
research
methods
used
in
population
geography
Besides
helping
you
develop
specific
geographic
skills
(e.g.
thinking
geographically,
becoming
familiar
with
data
defined
by
areas,
mapping,
learning
to
investigate
spatial
relationships,
etc.)
the
unit
will
also
assist
you
to
build
up
your
generic
skills
competencies
(e.g.
bibliographic
searching,
locating
and
using
databases,
qualitative
and
quantitative
data
analysis,
writing
skills,
oral
presentations,
etc.).
