GEOS264   Recommended Internet Sites
There are hundreds of sites about GIS, and different sorts of GIS projects, on the world wide web.
This page reviews a small number of the GIS sites which are good starting points for students in GEOS264.
Most of these pages have links to other pages so this list has been designed to be short.

ESRI (Environmental Systems Research Institute Inc.)
ESRI, the producers of ArcGIS (and ArcView) which is used by GIS students at Macquarie have made a user friendly, informative (but commercial) site. Internet Mapping is a good place to start.

The GIS Portal
Also Known as Great GIS Net Sites
This site has many links to other sites for the GIS industry (over 800). It is US based.

geoplace.com
This site belongs to the publisher of a magazine for GIS users and has lots of interesting articles on GIS applications and issues. (The most interesting links from the home page change each month!)

geocommunity
This link takes you to an article about the use of GIS for the Sydney Olympics, on a US website! There are lots of other interesiting links and articles on the site.

Mapinfo
Mapinfo is the main alternative GIS software to the ArcGIS software used at Macquarie. This link is provided to ensure balance with the ESRI link above. The site has links to lots of interesting GIS applications.
National Aeronautics and Space Administration
This site is recommended for the remote sensing imagery that is available. The NASA site is hugh. A good way to find remote sensing images is to choose Life on Earthon the banner of the home page. Then choose Looking at Earth on the lefthand side.
