Sorry about having to cancel the class.
I will make up the lecture cancelled at next weeks class. That will mean combining two lectures. A task that I intended to do the following week as well. The lecture slides are all available off ilecture. All it will mean will be, that I will have to be very economic with each topic and present them slightly differently.
As for the the tutorial that was cancelled. I would have gone through the two papers covering the topics of critical decisions and style of writing. Lovett's paper I would have listed the critical decisions as: (1) The surrogate measure on demand, (2) bus route times, (3) simplifactions of factors like congestion, (4) no link between the use of cars and buses (Not everyone has access to a car). It is a well structured paper. For Rosero-Bixby, the critical decisions were (1) the measure of facilities, (2) the concept of demand, (3) the use of two thresholds to measure inequality. This paper was poorly written, because of the structuring of its paragraphs. The term critical decision is refers to the GIS related decisions that if different could have produced different results.
In your presentations focus in on (1) topic, (2) ctritical decisions and (3) writing style.
I will not undertake this tutorial again. So next week (18th October) you have to submit your tutorial assignment ( a two page synopsis) and the members of one group will have to present their evalutions using powerpoint slides. Those groups have been assigned. Remember to bring a copy of your synopsis for each member of the tutorial class.

The 2006 Modules 3 & 4 Practical Book is available from the 22 September 2006. It is a pdf file of 85 pages, which you will need to download and printout from this site. It is essential for practical 1 that you have read the material covered and come to class with the data sets I requested you collect. This practical book sets out the assignment tasks for these modules in as complete a detail as is possible.
The 2006 Modules 3 & 4 Tutorial notes is available from the 22 September 2006.
In the lecture I gave you the wrong account from which to access CDATA01 in E5A322. The account you need to log onto is: census , the password is: cdata.01 , and the log in has to be set to GIS-E5A. The other domain is the local computer.
There is now a program for these talks, which alots students to either week 4 or week 5. Look at www.es.mq.edu.au/courses/GEOS371/mod2_2005/tutorials/present.htm
There are some new FAQs for assessment task 1. Look at www.es.mq.edu.au/courses/GEOS371/FAQ/faq1and2.html
The webserver which hosts the GEOS371 web pages is currently unstable. The cause is currently unknown - when it is known it will be fixed. This means that the website may be unavailable from time to time for the next few days. (Also some 2006 material that I had put on the server disappeared yesterday.) The ELS IT group are working to fix the server, in the meantime if you have a problem with it which doesn't go away in about 12 hours, please let me know. (GIScarol@els.mq.edu.au)
We have made arrangements for the GEOS371 lectures to be available via iLecture.
I (Carol) recommend that you print the Powerpoint slides available from the iLecture website and bring them to the lecture on Wednesday.
(For Modules 1 and 2 Powerpoint slides with larger diagrams will also be available via the Unit homepage - like GEOS264. Follow the link to Module 1.)
During Week 1, some 2005 material will be left on the web site to give you an indication of material included in the course. Do NOT print material that relates to 2005 as a number of updates will be made. (The year is indicated at the top of link pages to lectures, etc.)
Tutorials will start in Week 1. This week, all tutorials will be held in E5A
room 322 (next door to the computer lab).
(Most tutorials will move to E5A room 322 on a permanent basis.)
The tutorial session in week 1 will be short, it will introduce the
tutorial program and explain the requirements for other tutorial sessions.
Practical work in Week 1 reviews RS data and RS software.
It will cover the
material in weeks 11 and 12 practicals of the Biophysical Module
in GEOS264. Therefore students who did this module this year do not need to
attend! All other students should attend.
These are required to access password protected material such as lecture overheads and Powerpoint presentations, and lecture notes.
The username is geos371
the password is the same password used to access the GEOS264 overheads.
I can't put the password here, so if you have forgotten the password and
would like to access course material before the first lecture,
please email GIScarol@els.mq.edu.au.
