How Do I Become a Geoscientist?

Macquarie's flexible degree structure allows you to put together a program to suit your interests. Whether you have a career in mind or are uncertain of the direction you would like to take, we can offer advice to help you plan your program of study.

Most students enrol in a BSc and in a broad range of units in first year. This allows you to explore the options available while building a base for your further studies. For a career in Geoscience, we suggest that you include GEOS112: The Planet Earth in your first semester, and both GEOS115: Earth Dynamics, Materials and the Environment and GEOS116: Marine Geoscience in your second semester. With the flexible structure, you could also include units from across the campus, such as units in Economics, History, Politics or Languages.

Students work towards a coherency (or area of major study) in third year. Within the BSc, we offer coherencies in Geology, Geophysics and Environmental Geology. We also offer strands in Geoscience within the Bachelor of Environmental Science and Marine Science.
