LAVA - Learned Australasian Volcanologists
Association
LAVA is a specialist
group in volcanology under the auspices of the Geological Society of Australia.
Our inaugural meeting was held on Tuesday July 7th, 1998 at the Australian
Geological Convention in Townsville.

Specialist Group Aims
- To provide a forum for discussion
between members interested in and/or working in ancient and modern
volcanic environments in the Australasian region.
- To facilitate the exchange of ideas
and information between workers in volcanology and related disciplines
such as sedimentology, mineralisation and igneous geochemistry.
- To provide a stronger link between
volcanological researchers and industry-based geologists working in
volcanic terrains.
- To promote research into the
volcanology of the Australasian region.
- To provide a forum for promotion of
volcanology within geoscience to the wider community.

Our logo: Leanne McMahon has
used the colours of the Australian interior in the design of the logo. It is in
the style of Aboriginal art, and depicts the contrast between a modern volcano
and ancient volcanic rocks (pillow lavas, surge deposits, and columnar
jointing) exposed in an escarpment.
