Urban Growth and Urbanisation Statistics

Figures on urban and rural populations and urbanisation levels (% urban) for countries in 1994 and 2025 (projected). Population totals of the world's ten largest cities in 1950 and 2000 (projected).

The Urban Environment - Overview

Part 1 of the 1996-97 volume focuses on the critical environmental challenges facing the world's rapidly expanding urban areas. Chapters cover: Cities and the Environment, Urban Environment and Human Health, Urban Impacts on Natural Resources, Urban Transportation, Urban Priorities for Action, and City and Community: Toward Environmental Sustainability. An Appendix of Urban Data Tables is also included.

The World City System

A listing of Friedmann's main hypotheses and brief comment on his paper. Provides link to other pages on the topic of network and hierarchy in the world city system.

Specific Cities

On-line database of more than 3,000 cities throughout the world. Provides a variety of maps (some interactive) and other information (text and photos). Geographic information provided varies considerably from city to city. Interactive maps of a wide range of developed and developing world cities. Site is still being developed and the amount of detail available varies considerably from city to city. New York map illustrates the amount of detail that will hopefully ultimately be available for all the cities. City information especially for the business traveller Profiles of cities around the world produced by Macalester College geography students. Part of the WWW Virtual Library. Good detail for some cities. Some pages include photographic virtual tours of the cities. Singapore's home page on the World Wide Web. Contains quite a lot of useful geographic information. A study of urban housing development in China from 1949 onwards. Includes interesting photographs at various scales. Site not yet completed. Useful wide-ranging information resource on China's largest city. (Beijing Window is also available. To access, substitute Beijing for Shanghai in the above URL.) Photographs of famous national and provincial historic and cultural cities. Discussion document on urban development strategy. Foreword by President Nelson Mandela. Information on over 100 Russian cities. Lists subjects A-Z. Includes several useful urban topics - e.g. County and City Data Book, Geographic - Area Profiles, Housing Statistics, Metropolitan Areas, Poverty. A U.S. Geography Textbook by Professor Alan Lew (Northern Arizona University) with links to related web pages and graphics on the World Wide Web. Covers various U.S. cities (e.g. Megalopolis [Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, DC], Los Angeles, San Francisco). A photographic, text, sound and data archive on a selection of streets across Australia named Australia Street.

Habitat II - United Nations Conference on Human Settlements

Links to a wide variety of topics relating to the conference A summary of the conference (history, organisational sessions, the Istanbul Declaration on human settlements, the Habitat Agenda, goals and principles, commitments, global plan of action, etc.) Discussion of references to population and migration in the October 1995 draft of the Habitat Agenda. Recommendations of the Symposium for Habitat II.
 

Newspaper Resources

An increasing number of newspapers are going on the Internet, some in full text, others just with selected items. Useful material giving local and regional perspectives on urban issues can quite often be found in these sources. The following are a number of Asian newspapers that are worth consulting. Several of the newspaper sites include "search" facilities.
