Welcome to Human Geography at Macquarie University.
Human Geography provides an important bridge between the social and environmental sciences.
Two common themes for both teaching and research within Human Geography are:
- understanding similarities and differences between places, localities and areas in a range of social, cultural, economic and political aspects of human life.
- understanding interactions between people and their environments.
Human Geographers work at a variety of geographical scales ranging from local, through regional and national to, increasingly, global.
The Department has a strong applied focus, researching and teaching in areas like social and community planning, health-care delivery, population studies, resource and environmental management, public policy development and geographical information science.

Research active
Human Geographers work from a strong disciplinary foundation focused on place, space and scale across a wide range of applications, working closely with Social Scientists on questions of Social Inclusion (Centre for Research on Social Inclusion) and social policy and sustainability.
Human Geographers also work with Physical Geographers in studying relationships between people and their environment. At Macquarie there is a separate but closely related Department of Physical Geography
