Entrance to Sadat Metro Station, Midan al-Tahrir, central Cairo. The Metro system is French designed and is a cheap, clean and very efficient public transportation network. At present there are two lines; one from Helwan in the south to Al-Marg in the northeast (43 km), the other from Shubra al-Kheima in the north to Cairo University in Giza Governorate in the west (16km). This line is in the process of being extended 3 kilometres further west to the Giza suburbs. A third line (29km), from Imbaba, a northern working class suburb on the west bank, to Cairo Airport in the northeast (via Nasr City and Heliopolis), is planned. In the central parts of the city the Metro lines are underground. Further out they are surface lines.
