Identifying Your Skills
An important early step in the process of preparing yourself for attempting to enter the labour market is to sit down and rigorously identify the academic and other skills you have. At the same time, you should consider what firm evidence you could offer potential employers to convince them you definitely have those skills.
One of the interesting exercises run in the Portsmouth program involves getting every member of the class to list the skills they believe a geography graduate should possess. A composite list is then built up from the individual listings, which in turn is added to through a brief brainstorming session. The list produced is discussed, with attempts made to justify the identified skills, to categorise them, and possibly rank them.
(Have a go at doing this before you turn to the next page. That page gives a list of such skills compiled by British Universities - and is obviously equally applicable to Australia.)
