The Department of Human Geography was established in 1999 as part of a restructuring of Macquarie University. It was formerly part of an interdisciplinary School of Earth Sciences. Human Geography is one of seven departments within the Division of Environmental and Life Sciences and is one of the largest groups of Human Geographers in any Australian Universitiy.

Human Geography provides an important bridge between the social and environmental sciences. The department collaborates closely with the Department of Physical Geography.

Human Geography continues to be at the forefront of developing flexible learning innovations at Macquarie, often using the internet for its courses. Human Geography has also been central in developing interdisciplinary programs in Environmental Science, Social Science, Geographic Information Science, Population Studies, Aboriginal Studies and also contributes to Australian Studies, Women's Studies, Health Science and Asian Studies.

The Department of Human Geography welcomes inquiries from prospective undergraduate students, including those considering our honours program, and from postgraduate students. The Department has excellent facilities for research and welcomes academic visitors. Details of departmental organisation and performance are available in the Department Report.

Short courses on specialist topics are available from time to time, often tailored to specific needs as required, and are advertised in Geography Matters on the Human Geography home page .

Visitors are welcome to attend Departmental research seminars.

Individual courses are available to non-award students.

The Department Report 2002-2004 is available as a .pdf file.
