Graduate Diploma in GIS by coursework

The Graduate Diploma in Geographic Information Science is a part-time program aimed at local students who have a degree and wish to undertake a formal program of study in Geographic Information Science (GIS). The program is designed for the following groups of graduates:
- Graduates in employment who wish to undertake the undergraduate units in GIS and related fields and do not wish to undertake a First undergraduate degree;
- Graduates undertaking a qualifying program for postgraduate research in GIS.

is eligible to undertake the Graduate Diploma in Geographic Information
Science?
Graduates from any discipline without a major
in GIS.
What
if I want to proceed to postgraduate study in GIS?
Having completed the Graduate Diploma in GIS you
will be eligible to apply to undertake either:
- Master of Science (Research)
- Master of Arts (Research)
- PhD
The program can be completed in eighteen months if you start in semester 1 or 2 years if you start in semester 2.
You must obtain an aggregate of at least 24 credit points in units with the code GEOS or COMP, of which 18 credit points at least must be at 200 level or above including the following prescribed units:
- GEOS264 Geographic Information Systems (3cp)
- GEOS371 Geographic Information Systems: Technical Issues (3cp)
- GEOS426 Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Applications (3cp)
Students without similar computing units in their degree must also undertake:
- COMP114 Introduction to Information Systems
AND EITHER - COMP115 Introduction to Computer Science
OR - COMP125 Fundamentals of Computer Science
AND - COMP224 Database Systems
Previous undergraduate units cannot count for credit (all 24 credit points
must be new).
Additional units can be selected from the list of GEOS or COMP units.
Intakes into the program occur twice a year.
Applications for Semester
1 close at the beginning of September prior to the year of study and for
Semester 2 at the beginning of June in the year of study. Late fees apply
to late applications.
An individual's program of study must be approved by the Director
of the GIS program, Dr M. Poulsen.
