My research and teaching interests focus on issues around development, nationalism and identity. I am interested in how dominant social and political discourses come in to being and how they are challenged and altered through the everyday actions of ordinary people. Drawing on contemporary political philosophy my research explores such issues as practices of community development and professionalism in Thailand and the indigenous rights movement in Southeast Asia. I am also interested in the intersections between globalization, travel and identity and have worked with students on international field studies programs to investigate how international travel and experiential learning alters senses of belonging and creates more 'global' identities.
