Macquarie University's degree structure and the Human Geography programs are very flexible. You can study full-time, part-time and most Human Geography courses are available in flexible mode and can be studied externally. Human Geography has a number of Degree Program options avaible.

The Study Pathways pages outline the streams and possibilities for coherencies that include Human Geography.
The Discipline Combinations has links that help with the integration of Human Geography units for people from other disciplines and there are options for International Students who would like to study Human Geography. For non-geography students looking for just one geography unit, GEOS111 is particularly appropriate. GEOS118 is of value to those with a general interest in resource and environmental issues.

The first year (100 level) unit GEOS111 Geographies of Global Change provides the basis for later studies. GEOS118 Foundations for Resource and Environmental Management spans Human and Physical Geography and provides the foundation for the two Departments' jointly-taught major in the Resource and Environmental Management (REM) program.

All students intending to major in Human Geography should take GEOS111 together with GEOS118. Students intending to major in Resource and Environmental Management should take GEOS118, preferably together with both GEOS111 and GEOS117 Biophysical Environments.

Three second year (200 level) units, GEOS215 Geographies of Development, GEOS219 Geographical Perspectives on Population and GEOS281 Managing Our Cities, provide the foundation for a larger number of specialised third year (300-level) offerings. GEOS267 REM: Issues and Solutions provides the basis for the major in Resource and Environmental Management. GEOS262 Australians and their Environment is a general education course taken by many geography students as well as students from across the campus. GEOS264 Geographic Information Systems is of value to all students in human geography and REM, as well as being the prerequisite for more advanced GIS units at 300 level and 400 level.

There are eight units at 300 level of which 6-7 are usually taught each year on a rotation. Any three of these units completes a major in Human Geography although students specialising in the subject often take additional units. The information on Course Pathways recommends ways of putting together combinations of these 3rd year units.

The Department has produced a Survival Guide Booklet especially for Human Geography undergraduate students, it is available at the office. A first year support officer is available to guide you if you feel overwhelmed or are having difficulties.
