At Macquarie, the geophysics units concentrate on solid earth geophysics, and deal with both theoretical and applied aspects of the science.
Dr Lackie is responsible for teaching the Geodynamics and Advanced Geophysical Techniques units, as well as being unit convenor for Introduction to Geophysics and Data and Image Processing in Geophysics and Mining.
Dr Gohl is responsible for teaching the Environmental and Groundwater Geophysics and Exploration Geophysics units as well as contributing to the Introduction to Geophysics unit.
The area has close links with the Cooperative Research Centre for Australian Mineral Exploration Technologies (CRCAMET) which has an active research program into electrical methods, and with the National Key Centre of Geochemical Evolution and Metallogeny of Continents (GEMOC).
Dr Lackie's research interests revolve around the study of the palaeomagnetism and rock magnetism of volcanic and plutonic rocks of the New England Orogen. Dr Lackie is currently working with personnel from the CSIRO Division of Exploration and Mining and the University of Queensland. Dr Lackie is currently assembling a Petrophysics/Palaeomagnetic Laboratory to enable palaeomagnetic measurements to be done at the University.
Dr Karsten Gohl has research activities in applied seismology for deep crustal as well as shallow subsurface targets. His current projects include seismic imaging of the lithosphere, seismic studies of continental margins and oceanic crust, and integration of seismic and electromagnetic profiling.
