Morphodynamcs of sediment storage and gravel organisation along the Upper Hunter River, with implications for practical river management
Abstract
This project investigates sediment storage features at various spatial scales along the Upper Hunter River. The relative mobility of these different sediment storage features will be tested by examining relationships between the sediment mix and hydrology. Catchment input and historical river change will be used to explain why the sediment storage features in the Upper Hunter vary from those detailed in the literature. The aim is to develop a framework that will enable river managers to identify different sediment mixes and use them to understand how a river is behaving and how it is likely to adjust in the future. Within this context, improved river management and rehabilitation strategies can be developed. Hydraulic modelling techniques will be used to test different rehabilitation scenarios.
