Dr. Angela Maharaj - Research
Though most of my undergraduate teaching at the university concentrates on meteorology and climatology, my personal interests lie in oceanography. My research interests lie in interannual to decadal scale processes which drive the ocean. I examine satellite data, in situ meaurements and model results to understand the level of determinism in the oceanic component of the climate system.
In my Honours year, I examined the volume transport variability in the southwest Pacific Ocean. My doctoral research focused on detecting planetary (Rossby) waves in the mid-latitude South Pacific Ocean. These waves are an important mechanism for ocean adjustment and have important consequences for regional through to global climate variability at decadal timescales. I used spectral techniques such as Fourier and Radon Transform analyses to investigate the signals in the satellite data.
