I love maps – old maps, new maps, topographic maps, tourist maps, and satellite imagery. Ever since I first encountered GIS (Geographic Information Systems) I’ve enjoyed working in this field, as it combines the visual attractions of maps and the power of computer analysis. At Macquarie, I teach GIS in a number of different courses. This includes a short introduction to GIS in first year, and specialist units from second year onwards. My research interests focus on those areas of Australian landscapes and vegetation where GIS and remote sensing have potential to provide innovative data and understanding.

Teaching

I teach courses in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) at introductory, intermediate and advanced levels. GIS are computer systems capable of storing and using data describing places on the earth's surface.

Research

My research interests include fields where GIS and remote sensing have potential to provide innovative data for the study of spatial phenomena. In particular, this includes use of Digital Terrain Model (DTM) data to provide information on physical characteristics of land surface, and remote sensing data to provide information on Australian vegetation.

Community Outreach

Each year I am involved in a number of community projects. Recent activities have included occasional talks to high schools and creation of hands on displays using remotely sensed images for Macquarie's Open Days.
