Module Objectives: To introduce students to applied methods of dealing with a selection of stratigraphically important fossil groups.
Relevance: To give the student an awareness of what can be gleaned from the fossils they might find in their field area and to enhance students' skills in practical palaeontological method.
Module program: Practical experience in problem solving involving at least six stratigraphically important groups of fossils. Demonstrations of techniques.
Format, duration and timing: Four days of lectures and practical work at Macquarie campus. These dates fall on Thursdays and Fridays of 2 consecutive weeks. Attendance is compulsory. There will be a number of videos to watch at home prior to the on-campus sessions at Macquarie. Not offered in 2004.
Assumed Knowledge: The unit is designed for students who have not completed a great deal of palaeontology and are keen to learn what sort of information can be gleaned from fossils.

Special note concerning enrolment: Students intending to enrol should give their name and phone number to the Secretary of their department as soon as they can but certainly prior to 12 March, 2002.
