Module Name: Coastal Environmental Assessments

Staff involved: Associate Professor A.D. Albani and Dr. P.C. Rickwood (University of New South Wales).

Module Objectives: To teach students to carry out a coastal environmental assessment of a target area. The coastal fringe is under ever increasing pressure from urbanisation and industrialisation and it will be the task of many different graduates to set up and conduct monitoring programs. The techniques presented in this module are very relevant to such a task.

Module program: An understanding of the relationship between benthic foraminifera, sediments, sediment geochemistry and the water masses. The data base and its validity. Use of complex numeric data bases to evaluate the human impact on the coastal environment. Sampling and analytical techniques. Statistical analyses of the data bases. Case studies.

Format, duration and timing: Dates TBA.

Assumed Knowledge: Level 3 geology and/or biology.

Text and/or reference material: Working knowledge of the following computer programs, MS Excel and SPPS is desirable but not essential.

Assessment: Practical Assessment.
