Module Name: Coral Reef Dynamics
Staff involved: Glenn Brock, John Talent and Ruth Mawson (Macquarie University).
Module Objectives: To provide students with practical experience in a coral reef environment in order to study the dynamics of a living reef and apply the principles to the past.
Relevance: Students can better grapple with environments of the past if they are aware of the dynamics of similar environments that they can observe.
Module program: Lectures and seminars during the field work . One day spent at Macquarie in preparation, allocation of seminar topics, etc. Practical work on Heron Island (9 days) completed in groups involves a series of traverses, quadrat mapping exercises, calculations and seminars.
Format, duration and timing: Printed study guides; one day at Macquarie; nine days of lectures/practical work/seminars on Heron Island. Not offered in 2004.
Assumed Knowledge: Basic earth sciences or biology.
Text and/or reference material: A Coral Reef Handbook (3rd edition) - approx. $25. Course notes provided.
Costs involved: Cost per student from Gladstone to Gladstone (including travel by launch from Gladstone to Heron Island return, accommodation, food and bench fees at the Heron Island Research Station) will be $xxx. Assessment: Two written evaluations (c. 600 words each); seminar presentation and participation based topics to be allocated; marks awarded for contribution to group activities and final presentation of results.
