Module Name: Desktop Mapping for Earth Sciences
Staff involved: A/Prof. Geoff Taylor (UNSW)
Module objectives: To equip students to import data from various sources and to use this data to create outcrop and interpretative geological maps.
Module program:
Collecting data for subsequent use in a GIS
An introduction to the basics of MapInfo
An introduction to the basics of GeoBaseMap
Data import into Mapinfo
Map projections, importing MIF files, importing DXF files
Importing Excel data and raw data
Creating maps
Labelling, thematic maps, map editing, map layouts
An introduction to map querying
Format, duration and timing: An intensive three day shortcourse:
Fridays 19 March, 26 March and 2 April 2004 at UNSW for 9 hours/day.
Assumed Knowledge: Nil
Text and/or reference material: Students will be required to purchase a manual. The cost will be advised upon application to complete this course.
