SUBJECT INFORMATION
SUCOGG HONOURS ELECTIVE 12

Module Name: Geochemical Analysis Techniques and Applications

Staff Involved: Dr N.J. Pearson and Dr S.E. Jackson.

Module Objective: To familiarise students with the various analytical techniques used in geochemical analysis, concentrating on the facilities available in SUCOGG. To develop a basic working knowledge of the principles and procedures used in the evaluation and manipulation of geochemical data. To demonstrate the application of geochemical data to a diverse range of petrological problems.

Relevance: Advances in instrumentation and the development of new techniques are producing an abundance of geochemical data. An understanding of these analytical techniques is necessary to remove the 'black box' aura and to create a greater appreciation of the quality of the results. This is critical to the interpretation of geochemical data and the significance attained when propagated in petrogenetic models.

Module Program:
Review of analytical techniques and instrumentation including XRF, electron microprobe, mass spectrometry (trace element analysis and isotope ratios).
Planning an analytical program.
Sample preparation.
Errors and analysis statistics (limits of detection, precision, accuracy).
Fundamental data manipulation and data presentation (preparing a table of analyses for publication, elementary programming of spreadsheets, graphical display of data).

Format, duration and timing: Lectures and tutorial/practical sessions. Five days 10am to 5 pm. 13-15 April and 22, 23 May, 2004.

Costs: None

Assumed Knowledge: Third year level geochemistry, igneous or metamorphic petrology.

Text and/or reference material:
Recommended reference: Potts, P.J. (1989) A handbook of Silicate Rock Analysis. Blackie, Glasgow.

Assessment: Practical assignments; oral/written reports.
