UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES

INTRODUCTION

The Division of Environmental & Life Sciences at Macquarie University prides itself on its open, friendly approach and a dedicated, caring teaching staff. The emphasis at Macquarie is on flexibility and excellence. To assist students in deciding the courses to best fit their needs, every undergraduate student has access to an academic adviser. Special pre-enrolment advising sessions are arranged for prospective students each year in September and in January, when final course decisions are made. DEGREES OFFERED

In the Division of Environmental & Life Sciences you can study for a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts degree in the traditional disciplines of Geology, Geophysics, Physical Geography and Human Geography.

As well as broad programs in these areas, more specialised majors (coherencies) are available in Palaeontology, Geochemistry, Atmospheric Science, Geoecology, and Resource and Environmental Management.

NEW DEGREES

Available from 1998, these include Bachelor of Technology in Exploration Geoscience (Geochemistry or Geophysics), Bachelor of Science (Geophysics), Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts (Geographic Information Science), as well as the Bachelor of Environmental Science.

INTERDISCIPLINARY PROGRAMS

There are also interdisciplinary programs in Environmental Studies, Palaeobiology, Aboriginal Studies, South-east Asian Studies and Population Studies. An Honours degree can be achieved by suitably qualified candidates with a further year of study. Both the BA and the BSc can be combined with a Diploma of Education.

APPLICATION AND ADMISSION

Application for admission to first degree courses must be made through the University Admissions Centre (UAC), phone (02) 9330 7200. Information about the entry requirements for mature age students, international students and the Lighthouse Special Admission Scheme can be obtained by contacting the Macquarie University Student Centre, phone (02) 9850 7314. Details of the entry requirements and required background for courses in Earth Sciences are printed each year in the University Calendar, the UAC Guide and the booklet "Study at Macquarie".

FLEXIBLE STUDY

Undergraduate courses in Environmental & Life Sciences are available to both FULL TIME and PART TIME students. Some of the Units can be studied by Distance Education (external). Single Environmental & Life Science Units are also available for NON-AWARD study. Non-award study is available for students who do not wish to enrol in a program of study to count towards a degree or diploma. Both undergraduate and postgraduate courses may be taken as non-award. Entry as a non-award student is based on individual assessment for each Unit.
